Study permit
Study Permit Outside Canada
First-time study permit applications for individuals applying from outside Canada.
Overview
Most international students apply for a Canadian study permit from outside Canada before beginning their studies.
Study permit applications are assessed on academic purpose, financial capacity, ties to the home country, and the applicant’s overall credibility. Strong documentation and consistency are critical.
General eligibility requirements
- • Acceptance to a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
- • Proof of sufficient financial support
- • Police clearance certificate (if required)
- • Medical examination (if required)
- • Evidence of English or French language proficiency (if applicable)
Study intent and ties
Applicants must demonstrate that they are genuine students who intend to leave Canada at the end of their authorized stay. This includes showing academic progression, career relevance, and ties to their home country.
Working during studies
Eligible study permit holders may work on-campus or off-campus during their studies, subject to IRCC rules and permit conditions in effect at the time.
After graduation
Graduates of eligible Canadian programs may qualify for a Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP), which can provide valuable Canadian work experience for future permanent residence pathways.
