Study Permit Inside Canada
In certain situations, individuals already in Canada may be eligible to apply for or extend a study permit without leaving the country.
Overview
Canada allows some applicants to apply for a study permit from within the country, depending on their current status and circumstances.
Applying from inside Canada is not available to everyone. Eligibility depends on your legal status, compliance with previous conditions, and whether you fall under an approved in-Canada category.
Who may be eligible to apply from inside Canada
- • Minor children studying at the primary or secondary level in Canada
- • Exchange or visiting students
- • Individuals who completed a short-term course that was a condition of acceptance at a DLI
- • Certain temporary residents who meet IRCC eligibility criteria
Important: Visitors are not automatically eligible to apply for a study permit from inside Canada. Eligibility must be confirmed before applying.
Core requirements
Applicants must meet standard study permit requirements even when applying from within Canada.
- • Acceptance to a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
- • Valid legal status in Canada at the time of application
- • Proof of financial support for tuition and living expenses
- • Clear study intent and compliance with previous status conditions
Working while studying
Eligible study permit holders may work on-campus or off-campus during their studies, subject to IRCC conditions in effect at the time.
Work authorization depends on permit conditions and may change based on policy updates.
After graduation
Graduates of eligible programs may qualify for a Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP), typically valid for up to three years depending on the length of the program completed.
