Family Sponsership

To be eligible for Family Class sponsorship, the sponsor in Canada must meet the following requirements:

• The sponsor should be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident (PR)
• The sponsor must be 18 years of age or older;
• The sponsor must exceed the minimum necessary income level for this program. If the sponsor and the sponsored person are married or in a common-law relationship, then the income of both persons can be included.
• Both the sponsor and the sponsored relative must sign an agreement in which the sponsor commits to provide the financial support to the sponsored person when needed. The agreement also states that the sponsored person will make every single effort to support him/ her. Individuals under the age of 22 don’t have to sign this agreement.
• The sponsor needs to promise to provide financial support to the sponsored relative for at least 20 years. This period begins from the time the sponsored person becomes a permanent resident.

Sponsors need to meet and prove that they meet the minimum income requirements by submitting notices of assessment issued by the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA). They also have to meet the requirement of having a minimum income level for three consecutive years.
